You said nothing fancy like flames and stuff. Why not? I am also an amature and if i may judge my self from the results of my paint job i would say i did well. Have a look in the reviews section and you will understand what i mean. If you wish to do the flames (which by the way is very simple and very easy task) you can have a look at the www.customflamepainting.com. Thats where i went and it was worth the trouble.
Anyhow this is what you will need because i believe the cost to have it painted by someone else is too much:
1. a spay gun (around 20-50 usd). i used a compressed air spray gun since i had already a small compressor. Some reviews i read though by people painting by electric spray gun were good.
2. Some fine grade sand paper.
3. The paint you will use (either metallic covered by a layer of clear coat or any simple paint mixed with a hardener).

First you need to sand the parts you wish to paint. After positioning all the parts on stands or wherever (have in mind that the spray should be always horizontal to the area to be painted as much as possible).See that you have good atomization and then you are ready to paint.
Spray you first layer at a distance of 15cm and always have in mind that you shouldnt worry if cant see the sprayed paint covering the old paint. this will be covered with the rest of the layers (2 or 3). never paint until you see the paint is wet because this will give you runs. i forgot to mention that i painted in an open space and i had reasonable results. if you have an enclosed space use it but ensure that you have adequate ventilation as not to suffocate. After finishing all the layers and you are satisfied with the results if you used metallic or acrylic paints that need clearing on top then note that you should spray your clear coat maximum 1 day after. i did it 30 min after since the thinner based coats dry out in about 5 min after.
That all about painting. if you have more questions dont hesitate to contact me or have a look at the site mentioned above.
Regarding the removal of the rear fender you should do the following:
1. place the bike on a stand so that the rear wheel is up in the air.
2. have someone holding the bike or secure it very well.
3. remove the rear wheel and pay attention to the rod and the bushes so they are assembled in the same order.
4. dissconnect all the wiring for the rear signals, the plate light and the stop light.
5.Remove the four bolts size 10 or 12 i dont quite remember the exact size, they are full threated and should have washers.
6. remove the fender and place it on something soft.

Thats all and good luck
